18 mm vs 19 mm plywood — does the millimetre matter?
A recurring question at the counter. The short answer is yes, sometimes — here is when it does and when it does not.
When it matters
- Modular kitchen and wardrobe fittings — hinges, drawer slides and fittings are engineered for specific board thicknesses. A mismatch means longer screws, mis-aligned hinges, or a shutter that never closes cleanly.
- Edge-banding suppliers stock band widths for specific board thicknesses. 18 mm and 19 mm need different bands.
- Load-bearing shelves — 1 mm of thickness is roughly 5-6% of stiffness. On a 4-foot open shelf, that changes deflection under weight.
When it doesn't
- Internal partitions and non-visible carcase work — 18 mm and 19 mm are interchangeable.
- Anywhere your carpenter is free to plan the joinery around the board, rather than the other way around.
What we stock
Our standing plywood range is 18 mm in both NM Gold and NM Premium. If a project needs 19 mm specifically — usually because a drawing or specification calls for it — WhatsApp us with the item and quantity and we will confirm arrangement time.
The right question
Before you buy, ask your carpenter or designer: "which board thickness does the drawing call for?" That single question saves the rebuild.
Still not sure which is right for your project?
WhatsApp a photo of the room or the drawings — a specialist will call the grade before you buy.
