Commercial vs Marine plywood — where each belongs
Marine plywood is built for continuous water contact; commercial plywood is built for interiors. Most rooms only need one of them. Here is how to match the grade to the room.
The two grades in one line
- Commercial plywood = MR or BWR, made for dry and semi-dry interiors.
- Marine plywood = BWP to IS:710, made for continuous water contact.
Where Marine belongs
- Boat and dock work — the original use case
- Bathroom vanities, especially in humid cities
- Kitchen sink base cabinets, which live with slow leaks
- Furniture that stays outdoors
Where Commercial belongs
- Bedroom and living-room furniture
- Wardrobes, lofts, dado and panelling
- Any surface that will not meet standing water
The common mistake — in both directions
Specifying Marine everywhere feels safe, but it specifies water performance the room will never ask for. Specifying Commercial in a bathroom sets up a replacement within a couple of years. The grade should match the room — that is the entire decision.
