MR vs BWR vs BWP — which plywood grade for what?
The single most-asked question at our counter. A quick decision table, then the details — so you never buy the wrong grade for the wrong surface.
The short answer
| Where the plywood goes | Correct grade |
|---|---|
| Bedroom wardrobe, loft, dado | MR |
| Kitchen carcase (not near sink) | BWR |
| Bathroom, kitchen sink, wet areas | BWP |
Why the three grades exist
All three are built the same way: thin layers (plies) of wood bonded together. The adhesive changes:
- MR (Moisture Resistant) — urea-formaldehyde adhesive. Handles humidity, not water contact.
- BWR (Boiling Water Resistant, IS:303) — phenolic-modified adhesive. Handles occasional water contact.
- BWP (Boiling Waterproof, IS:710) — phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. Handles standing water.
Using MR where BWP is needed is the classic mistake. The plywood looks identical the day it is fitted. Six months later, in a bathroom, it swells.
The names read wrong
BWR sounds "waterproof enough". It is not. BWR is water resistant — occasional splashes. BWP (with the P for Proof) is the one for standing water.
What we stock in each grade
- MR / BWR: NM Ply (Gold and Premium), 18mm / 12mm / 9mm.
- BWP: Advisor, 18mm / 12mm / 9mm / 6mm, IS:710 certified.
